By German Villasenor and Maria B.V. at ringside. Top Rank/Kcal along with the beautiful Arrowhead
Pond of Anaheim, CA. brought yet another succesful card in the series
they have been running in the year 2002.
In the main event, the always colorful and whacky Jorge ''el maromero''
Paez now (74-14-5-50 KO's) fighting at the lightweight limit showed
he still has very good drawing power as he brought in 4,167 fans to
watch him battle the always game Juan Macias, (27-18-2-19 ko's)
Macias, a dangerous opponent every time out, loses only to the best,
and at times gives the top contenders a run for their money. Paez had
done battle once before with Macias, stopping the fellow Mexican fighter
with a wicked body shot in that first encounter.
The first round was mainly a ''see what you have in this one round''
with Paez getting the best of it to win the round.
Things heated up in the second as Maromero opened up as did Macia, round-Paez,
better shots while dodging straight punches from Macias. Macias landed
some good shots in the third with Paez coming out of it with a cut over
the right eye, due to an accidental headbutt. Both men hurt each other
in the following round as they traded on the inside, Paez delighted
his fans as he at times held Macias on the inside and pretended to dance
with him, as well as his usual peak-a-boo, followed by some funky waist
movement, looking away saying Hi to the people at ringside and throwing
some bolo punches as Macias came in.
Back to the fight...
The next couple rounds had both men landing and hurting each other briefly
against the ropes with Paez edging out Macias due to overhead right
hands as well as very nice and crisp double, triple left hooks both
upstairs and to the body.
Paez dropped Macias in the eight round with a three punch combo ending
with a right hand to Macias mug, Paez hit Macias on the back while on
the canvas prompting the ref to take a point away.. by this time Paez
had landed at last count 6-7 low blows from which he drew only a warning
from the ref.
The end comes with 35 seconds left as Paez smells the end and goes after
a hurt Macias makes his way up and still very wobbly tries to fight
back, Paez jumps in with a vengeance, throwing everything but the spit
bucket at Macias leaving no choice for the ref but to step in and stop
the fight with only seconds left in the eight round...After the fight
Paez noted that he still hopes to get a title shot and said that he
hopes is not eighty years old when he finally gets one, very pleased
crowd laughed along with the fighter and his comments.
On the co-main event, Super bantamweight Carlos Contreras (19-6-2-13
ko's) seemed on his way to an early night as he dropped Edel Ruiz
twice with vicious body punches in the third round after a slow first
round and a second round which had both men warming up to the task.
Somehow out of sheer guts Ruiz fought back and stayed in the fight for
the 10 round distance as a determined Contrearas never let up trying
to waste Ruiz via a constant body attack. The judges comeback with a
unanimous decision for Contreras with scores of 97-91 / 97-92 x 2.
